“Wine is so civilized. An elixir of life brought to perfection. It brings enjoyment, appreciation and truth, and most of all, it begs to be shared.” ~ The Green Cottage on Morro Bay
Wine
The story of wine in San Luis Obispo County began with Father Junipero Serra and his friars in 1797. The industry grew slowly until the mid to late 1900s. Now historic former ranchlands have been transformed into one of the state’s premier wine regions in America with nearly 60,000 acres of grapes and almost 300 wineries. It’s no wonder our wine industry is a major attraction for visitors. We have ideal growing conditions with cool coastal breezes and a large group of gifted winemakers. Both the north and south parts of our county have been lauded as American Viticulture Areas (AVA) and they are recognized throughout the country and around the world.
Old country roads and oak-studded hillsides surrounding our wine regions make San Luis Obispo County an outstanding wine country destination the quality of wine and also for the visual experience.
With 300 wineries scattered across the county and a cadre of trailblazing artists and winemakers creating immersive experiences and exciting new tastes to thrill visitors, the wine world of the Central Coast is dramatically changing. Wine Enthusiast magazine named San Luis Obispo one of its top 10 wine destinations for 2018 along with wine ares in France, Australia and Hong Kong. Wine Spectator‘s highest-rated wines for 2019 included Denner and Saxum.
So many to try. So little time.
We have selected our favorite wineries to help you begin your San Luis Obispo County wine exploration. Enjoy!
