“My advice to my guests is simple: do the things that make your heart sing, and make you forget to check your phone.”       ~ The Green Cottage on Morro Bay

Places:

Plan a road trip. Explore 100 miles of the legendary Highway 1 from Ragged Point south to Nipomo. The road will lead you past magnificent scenic coastline, rolling hills dotted with ancient oaks, lush agricultural communities and cute little beach towns. The Green Cottage is centrally located in Los Osos, just off Highway 1, south of Morro Bay and north of San Luis Obispo.

Download this activity map. It will show you where to view wildlife and how to get to beach access points, whale viewing areas, farmers markets as well as hiking, biking, golf and wine tasting venues.

We provide this map at the Cottage for our guests, and you can download one here:

Visit Piedras Blancas Light Station, near San Simeon, for a 2-hour docent-led tour of the grounds and the lighthouse. Make sure to see the nearby elephant seals, the only place in the world where you can easily see a rookery.
View elephant seals near Piedras Blancas light station near San Simeon, California
The elephant seal rookery near Piedras Blancas Light Station is the largest in the northern hemisphere. The seals migrate twice each year. You can easily and safely see them as they mate, birth, molt and rest on shore. Docents from Friends of the Elephant Seal educate visitors and encourage stewardship.
23 million year old Morro Rock is called the Gibraltar of the Pacific
For 23 million years, Morro Rock has stood as a sentinel along our coast. It is much beloved by locals, highly recognizable and used for navigation, and very distinctive at 576 tall. It is part of a string of nine volcanic plugs sacred to the Chumash and the Salinan indigenous peoples. It is part of the view from the Green Cottage. Our guests love it too.
Surf or watch, the Central Coast is a great place to do it
Surfers love the iconic surfing locations near Morro Rock. Bring your board or just plop down a beach chair and watch. There’s lots of action to enjoy. Photo: George Lepp
Brightly colored boats at Cuesta Inlet
Cuesta Inlet, with it’s brightly colorful boats reflecting into the water, is just a few feet from the Green Cottage. It’s a delightful place to walk, especially in early morning or late afternoon when the sun is low and provides beautiful warm light.
