“Visit the artisans and historians—they are the ones who open the window that widens the mind and gives joy to the spirit. They tell the story of the past and predict the future. They have much to tell.”       ~ The Green Cottage on Morro Bay

Art and Culture

If art is life, then life is the art of capturing experience. San Luis Obispo County calls to the artist in all of us, inviting individuals to shed the normal and reach for the new, raw and eclectic. From soaking up the beautiful ocean views across sprawling sand beaches to shopping for treasures among artists and poets, we invite you to explore, experience and enjoy the ways our area speaks to your soul.

For centuries, spectacular beauty and rich natural resources have defined our area, and the allure lives on. Whether you’re looking for a top-shelf tequila tasting, an original painting, a day spent in a museum or full immersion into the culture of organic farm-fresh-to-table gourmet cuisine, we have it all—and done differently than anywhere else.

To get a true taste of authentic SLO County, spend the day mixing and mingling with the people who breathe life into the area…the artists, musicians, museum curators, castle guides and adobe docents. You’ll find artistic expression brought to life in both the physical and spiritual form. You’ll walk away from your visit with memories to bring you back — time and again.

Hearst Castle is an architectural wonder and an art museum
Hearst Castle along the famed coast Highway 1, was designed by architect Julia Morgan and was the home of William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies. It houses one of the world’s best and most diverse art collections, and at one time sat on 250,000 acres of land. There are guided tours throughout the day. Photo: George Lepp.
Fine art galleries, in every community in San Luis Obispo county, connect local artists with art lovers. You will discover preeminent California Plein Air painters like Elizabeth Tolley in formal galleries to the wiggy sculptures by Ron Roundy made from found materials displayed in pop-up galleries.
Montaña de Oro State Park and Spooner Ranch House
The rich history of the Chumash and Salinan peoples from 9000 years ago, the Spanish explorers, the ranching families, the bootleggers, can all be found at the Spooner Ranch House Museum in Montaña de Oro State Park. Enjoy hiking, sweeping vistas and docent tours.
The Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo Is a world-class performing arts center
The San Luis Obispo Performing Arts Center, on the Cal Poly campus is a world class venue that attracts national and international artists. It has a new state-of-the-art sound system and is the home of the Fisk Opus pipe organ with 2,767 pipes.
Mission San Luis was founded in San Luis Obispo, California, 1772 by Father Junípero Serra
Mission San Luis de Tolosa, founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1772, is still an active church. There is a museum and docent tours. The gardens have evolved over centuries. The grape arbor is a reminder of vineyards that once stretched for acres.
Chumash Girl and bears at Mission Plaza San Luis Obispo
“Tuquski Wa Suwa,” a Chumash girl and bears, is the much beloved bronze sculpture by Paula Zima, in Mission Plaza, directly in front of the old Mission, in San Luis Obispo.
Point San Luis Lighthouse was built in 1889 after the Queen of the Pacific ran aground
One of the most fascinating and absolutely hidden gems along our coast, is Point San Luis Lighthouse. This fully restored, fully functioning official light station is tucked around a point of land in Avila and can only be seen from the ocean. See the BLOG page for history, details and tour information.
Very intimate vaudeville theater with variety shows, and in-house pub
Be prepared to participate at the Great American Melodrama in Oceano by shouting warnings, saying “awww” to the heroine or hissing at the villain! While the sawdust is gone from the floor, the professional theater is fun, funny, sometimes dramatic and very entertaining for the entire family. Even our nephews, Juniors at Cal Poly, love it!
