His house was perfect, whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking, or best, a pleasant mixture of them all.

~ J.R.R. Tolkien (English writer; author,
The Lord of the Rings. 1892-1973)

As you approach for the first time you gaze upon my small green façade and begin to think of the potential that lurks now just out of sight. We both, you and I, stand on the edge of transformation…for we are about to begin a delightful experience with one another.

Indeed, as the purple door swings open and you cross my threshold, you step inside to a restful haven.  A sense of peace arises as you realize you have selected the right place to be for a time — a perfect place to relax, rejuvenate, revive and refresh from the world outside.

As you move through the cottage, past the sitting and entertainment area, your eyes continue to follow the light to the large kitchen, which welcomes the sky and bay views through my picture windows, bringing them in to meet you.

As you step onto my deck where you can sit with your coffee or a glass of wine and look down along the shoreline or across the bay to Morro Rock, to the sand spit, and the surrounding mountains. For this place that I live is just as much a part of me as the wooden walls that hold me up.

My kitchen and bathroom have been completely renovated, and there’s a surprise. There is special place I call the “private room.” It is a separate, quiet space, for meditation, study, napping, dressing, reading or getting “gussied up” to emerge in a sort of grand entrance for the evening, whether you’re going out on the town or just stepping into the kitchen for a candlelight dinner. As a consummate romantic this is one of my favorite spaces. There is a luggage closet, wonderful built-in dressers, and linens from Curaçao. In addition to the day bed, there is a desk and a dressing area with an exquisite pierced tin, full-length mirror from Mexico.

I have DVDs and a large flat screen TV, books, board games, cards, a chess set, and of course a lovely king size bed.

What you won't find here are ringing phones, blaring TVs or fax machines -- all by design, although we do provide wireless internet service and a 38" HDTV for watching DVDs, plus nearly 100 DVDs to choose from. I am not a Best Western or a Holiday Inn. I am the opposite. I am about disconnecting from a fast-paced world and I provide you the ability to escape.

There is much to do here . Bring your kayaks and bicycles. Take a hike or ride a horse along the beach. A ten-minute walk will take you to the Audubon Society’s Sweet Springs Preserve, where bird species abound and nature lovers hold weddings.

The Central Coast is blessed with wonderful restaurants and fine wines, as well as a multitude of cultural performances.

I look forward to seeing how you experience what I have to offer you. What I know is that it will be different for both of us than what we can now anticipate, as it is with each visitor that enters, partakes of my gifts, and shapes me with the spirit of their hearts.

“Two drifters off to see the world; there’s such a lot of world to see. We’re after that same rainbow’s end, my Huckleberry friend, Moon River and me.”

~ Moon River from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,”
Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini

There are still beautiful places in the world that expose visitors to secondhand smoke. The Green Cottage is a smoke-free environment.

And so it was in the 1940s when I was one of the first dwellings to be built on the tip of this wildflower covered peninsula that juts into the southern tip of Morro Bay along the coast of California. The grizzly bears for which Los Osos was named were gone by then and there were none of the luxury homes that surround me now. However, just as today, the estuary teemed with fish, wild ducks, and countless other bird species.

I was originally built to shelter the duck hunters and fishermen who were attracted here, but I was soon bought in the 1950s by my current owner’s parents and was used as a residence while they built their dream home next door. I have been a family guesthouse since then and my charm as a water front cottage has been retained through the complete refurbishing I received in 2009.

The bay outside my door is part of the National Estuary Program, as well as a designated bird sanctuary. There are many places nearby to view birds, including my pier that takes you onto the bay from my backyard. Morro Bay is an important stopover on the Pacific Flyway and winter home to numerous bird species.

I may be just a small beach cottage, but step into my entry and you’ll be welcomed by an eclectic mixture of art and antiques collected by my family over the years and lovingly displayed to create a romantic and intimate environment to inspire you during your stay.

“I have a tale to tell, my very own…won’t you come inside awhile and help me sing my song?”
